New @stripe Economics piece today about the recent firming of US productivity growth & AI's potential role in it.

I'm all for doing the research. But the safety conclusions are based on just 3 Waymo severe crashes versus 16 NYC Taxi/Lyft severe crashes.
As a result, the per mile estimates are statistically indistinguishable. The 67% drop is probably just noise!

After all else has been tried and failed, Kelly McGuinness &c. decide to do some actual research, and find ... there's no evidence to support the notion that Waymos would be safer than the drivers they would replace in NYC, and some evidence to suggest they wouldn't. Read the

There is a slightly different picture when you look at killed or seriously injured, where Waymo is still safer than human drivers but harder to tell statistically from rideshare
But with just 3 events total for Waymo it’s just way underpowered to be sure

As @MinneapolisFed shows, the homeownership rate on a per capita basis (owners / people) is lower than on a household basis (households / people)—because many young people haven't even started their own households; they're living with parents/friends. What's going on? 🧵 ...

I analyzed the FEC donation records of employees of America's top 100 tech companies:
1) American tech employees overwhelmingly donate to Democrats, tech CEOs are increasingly split
2) Even companies like Palentir and Anduril lean Democratic, though their employee giving is

🚨NEW: In the 9 months after last year’s reconciliation law enacted unprecedented SNAP cuts, the number of people receiving SNAP fell by more than 4.5 million. Based on available data, we estimate that at least 1.5 million fewer kids are receiving SNAP.

The labor market went thru 4 massive non-AI shocks simultaneously: 1) bullwhip from Great Resignation, 2) high inflation/interest rates, 3) pervasive WFH, 4) rise & fall in immigration. Not only tough to id any AI effects, but until recently, AI plausibly the *smallest* of these.

How do the editors of a marxist economics journal allocate the scarce pages amongst the many submissions they receive? Based on the submission’s labor time? Or perhaps it is divided equally 🤔
